About this Item

Description:

Fourth edition, published in 1915. Rose Macaulay's sixth published novel, which won the Hodder and Stoughton £1000 Novel Competition when first published in 1912. This copy retains the very scarce original dustwrapper which mentions the prize. ***Very good in light-grey brushed cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and decorations to the spine and front board. The gilt is still nice and bright, especially on the front board. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine very slightly creased. There is also a small bump to the lower edge of the front board. Corners still sharp with just a small bump to the lower corner of the back board. Page block edges lightly foxed. Internally also very good. There is some foxing to the first and last few pages, including the title page, but otherwise the pages are clean. There is an interesting contemporary label tipped to the front free endpaper stating "Award of Merit - with compliments from John Bull" [John Bull magazine was a popular periodical that was published from 1892 until 1960 - similar in style to the American magazine "The Saturday Evening Post" - encapsulating post-war Britain and employing some of Britain's finest illustrators. The magazine also included short stories by major British authors such as H. E. Bates, Agatha Christie, Nicholas Monsarrat, N. J. Crisp, Gerald Kersh, J. B. Priestley and C. S. Forester]. There are also three ownership names - one in ink, one in pencil and one on a small label. Spine tight. [please see scans] ***In a very good original printed dustwrapper, which is largely complete. There is some shallow loss to the head of the spine, the tips of foldovers, and a few small nibbles and loss to the edges. The spine of the dustwrapper is slightly faded. The panels and folds of the dustwrapper retain the original vibrant brick-red colour. ***192 mm x130 mm. 322 pages. ***'Dame Emilie Rose Macaulay, DBE (1 Aug 1881 - 30 Oct 1958) was an English writer, most noted for her award-winning novel "The Towers of Trebizond". Macaulay's novels were partly influenced by Virginia Woolf, and she also wrote biographies and travelogues. During World War One, Macaulay worked in the British Propaganda Department, after some time as a nurse and later as a civil servant in the War Office. During the inter-war period she was a sponsor of the pacifist Peace Pledge Union; however she resigned from the PPU and later recanted her pacifism in 1940. Her London flat was utterly destroyed in the Blitz, and she had to rebuild her life and library from scratch, as documented in the semi-autobiographical short story, "Miss Anstruther's Letters", which was published in 1942. Rose Macaulay was an active feminist throughout her life.' [Wiki] ***Fourth edition, published in 1915, of Rose Macaulay's sixth published novel, in its original 1915 dustwrapper. Published during the First World War - dustwrappers from this period are extremely scarce now. Most likely a unique copy now and very collectable. Of interest to collectors of the Hogarth Press and the Bloomsbury group, and the work of Rose Macaulay. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 7492x
