VOLUME III ONLY. Later printing (without Scribner's letter code upon copyright page). xlviii, 862 pages. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 15.75cm. Dust jacket rubbed and soiled; spine ends chipped; scuffs and short tears with latter having some verso tape repairs; front flap's top corner clipped with two price ink stamps. Black cloth; slight flaking to otherwise still bright gilt stamping to spine and front board; rear board has some white paper adhesion from dj verso. Light toning to text block edges and endpapers; some soiling to front endpapers; interior pages are clean. Binding is firm. A very good+ copy in a good+ dust jacket. With Introduction, b/w portrait plates, b/w map illustrations amongst text, five appendices, Short Title Index, Acknowledgements, Selected Critical Bibliography, Index, and foldout map tipped-in at rear free endpaper recto.
