London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, [1895]. ix + 285pp, silver gelatin photograph portrait of Robertson as frontispiece. Square 8vo. Buffy sand cloth, slightly marked. Else fine. Includes a three-page handwritten letter to art collector W. Middleton, Esq. (apparently a miniature painting and book collector) from Emily Robertson (the editor of this book) dated April 23, 1900. According to (edited) Wikipedia: Robertson created a new style of miniature portrait that became dominant by the middle of the nineteenth century; at least four examples are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. He broke away from prevalent miniature styles, such as Richard Cosway. He also was critical of these earlier painters, describing their works as "pretty things but not pictures." Robertson's style included larger, more detailed paintings. His use of paint emulated large oils on canvas by adding gum arabic to the paint to give it greater lustre and depth of colour. Rare.
