Favre, a Swiss priest, heavily criticized the practices of Jesuit missionaries established in the area especially their tolerance of certain pagan rites practiced by the Christians. As a result this work was put on the Index and publicly burned in Fribourg in April, 1746. . *** THE AUTHOR: Pierre-François FAVRE [1706-1795]: . He was a Swiss religious who accompanied Elzéar-François des Achards of La Baume (1679-1741), chosen in 1736 by Clement XII as Apostolic Visitor of the missions of Cochin chine and Cambodia, with superhuman work to put an end to the differences that divided religious orders in those remote countries, for the schism of the Rites. . Embarked on Port-Louis of Britain, in November 1737, the legacy came to Macao in July 1739, not returning from until March 1739, arriving to Macau in June. Made a Pastoral Letter to all missions to announce their visit, but falling ill, died as a result of these diseases in Hue on 2 April 1741. These letters are thus the story of the journey and your first stay. . Favre, Pierre-François . birth08/08/1706 Bretigny (pers. St. Bartholomew), death05.03.1795 Bretigny, cath., Bretigny. Son of Charles Nicolas and Elizabeth Mathey. Ordained priest by the Archbishop of Avignon in 1731, F. accompanying the bishop of Halicarnassus in his apostolic visit missions of Annam, Cochin China and Cambodia (1738-1742). On his return, he was appointed Attorney General in Rome for Foreign Missions of Paris, Apostolic Prothonotary and Knight of the Golden Spur. His edifying and curious letters on the visit of Mr. (François Des-Relish) La Baume, Bishop of Halicarnassus, in Cochin China in the year 1740 , apparently published in Venice, made in Neuchâtel in 1746, were banned by the Bishop of Lausanne Joseph Hubert de Boccard and burned by order of the government of Fribourg. Non ecclesiastical function, F. recovered his priestly duties. He was chaplain of many foreign aristocratic families emigrated in Lausanne. He published in 1787 in Avignon an interesting Memory Parish Assens directed against its priest, Jean-Baptiste of Odet, future Bishop of Lausanne. F. distinguished by the quarrelsome relationship he had with his ecclesiastical superiors, while enjoying the benevolence of some prelates. . *** The below is not in stock now: NOTES TO THE 2ND EDITION: Freres Barzotti, Venice 1753, 3 volumes in flight. in-12 to.
