Compuesta por 19000 versos, constituye una de las joyas del romancero español. El texto del CANTAR DE MIO CID, punto de arranque e inspiración de Zorrilla, fue puesto por escrito en 1140 por Per Abbat. Aunque estaba basado en hechos reales, el paso del tiempo ha ido dando carácter de leyenda a la personalidad y a las andanzas de su protagonista.
