About this Item
BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 435 pgs, frontis portrait. Second Edition. Unit roster 425-435. Original maroon cloth with gilt titled cover. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Minor rubbing to edges and covers. Gilt a bit faded and spine lightly faded. Interior pages are clean and tight. With clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author was a private in Company C. From the Preface: "I have written this Life in the form of letters , thus making it less didactic and stiff than had I observed the historic style." The regiment was recruited in Berkshire County and mustered in at Camp Briggs in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. William F. Bartlett was placed in charge of the regiment as colonel and commanding officer. Bartlett, as a former captain in the 20th Mass Infantry, had been shot in the knee at the Siege of Yorktown and had his leg amputated. While leading the 49th, he used a prostatic leg and a crutch. The 49th Massachusetts was assigned to the Department of the Gulf and saw heavy combat during the Siege of Port Hudson. Nice copy of a scarce regimental, despite it being a second edition; REFERENCES: DORN MA376: I could not improve on it; so, except the correction of a few errors, it is just the book your fathers read and prized ; NEVINS I pg 113: Because of Johns descriptive powers, it is unfortunate that his military service was confined solely to the Louisiana theater. ; COULTER 256: "The author was much interested in the Negroes, studied them individually and in their religious meetings, and boldly advocated social equality. For a few weeks he operated with troops out of Donaldsonville in a highly successful search for provisions and, he admits, for any jewelry within reach. When the enlistment period ended the regiment sailed up the Mississippi to Cairo and returned to Massachusetts in cattle cars."; MULLINS/REED #144. Seller Inventory # 0624036
