Issued in 'The Complete Samuel Butler' series, which is listedverso half-title, this list, but not t.p., gives the subtitle 'An essay after a completer view of evolution' and describes it as 'Third Edition with Addenda', t.p. has 'New Edition, with Author's Addenda', this is explained in Streatfield's Preface which states that this is the 1878 3rd ed. reprinted from original plates but with the addition of 'three entirely new passage' he found among Butler's papers + a fourth passage which Butler had gummed into another owner's copy, I thus feel '1st Thus' is a reasonable description (the actual 1st was 1877), although the Addenda amount to barely 3 pp. x+310; faint tanning to outer sides of endpapers, prev.owner's 1976-dated sig.top front endpaper (mine alas), scattered brown flecking to fore-edge of textblock. Blue cloth covers clean, bright and unworn but centre front has a small patch of cloth rippling which is quite trivial and clearly some kind of binding fault. This appears to be extremely scarce and must be considered to prefered edition for academic purposes even given the brevity of the additional material. Note: quoted shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range.
