The tiniest bit of rubbing to the corners, a wee bit of rubbing to top of spine. Filipino riddles deal largely with animals, plants, and objects of local character. This unusual little book begins with a 20-page introductory (and quite scholarly) essay on the riddle in general, and the Filipino riddle in specific. This is followed by a 2-page bibliography on the topic, and then the 415 Filipino riddles, divided by their various topics and arranged alphabetically (animals, boats, body parts, etc.). Looks as if in 120 years, this book has hardly been opened. Beautiful condition. ".The riddle is an indirect presentation of an unknown object, in order that the ingenuity of the hearer or reader may be exercised in finding it out." (Geschichte des Rathsels, by Fredereich) Dedication page reads: "This little book of Filipino Riddles is Dedicated to Galacio Carburian, Casimiro Verceles, Rufino Duncan of Agoo, Union Province. "The riddle is a play of wit, which endeavors to so present an object by stating its characteristic features and peculiarities, as to adequately call it before the mind, without, however, actually naming it."
