First novelist Sutton alternates between events in different locations and Atlanta, where Evelyn, an unlikely 72-year-old, cane-toting heroine, does what she can to help find a murderer. Low-life descriptions of Chicago abound, replete with nasty meanies involved in car theft, child pornography, drugs, and sex. The drug-crazed killer eventually kidnaps Evelyn and her 69-year-old friend Englander, but with surprising results.
