A later printing of the Macmillan edition. With fifty illustrations by John Tenniel. ***Near fine in green cloth-covered boards with black titles to the spine, and with the fabulous Tenniel illustration on the front board, lined in black and red. The boards are clean and unmarked, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, Corners sharp. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions. No foxing. Pages clean. No creases or tears. Printed on nice quality paper. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 7s 6d net. Edges of dustwrapper just slightly rubbed and creased. No serious creases, chips or tears. No fading except for the red titles on the spine. ***208 pages. 190mm x 130mm. ***'"Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There" (also known as "Alice Through the Looking-Glass" or simply "Through the Looking-Glass") is a novel published on 27 December 1871 by Lewis Carroll, a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church, University of Oxford, and the sequel to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865). Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. There she finds that, just like a reflection, everything is reversed, including logic (for example, running helps one remain stationary, walking away from something brings one towards it, chessmen are alive, nursery rhyme characters exist, and so on). "Through the Looking-Glass" includes such verses as "Jabberwocky" and "The Walrus and the Carpenter", and the episode involving Tweedledum and Tweedledee. The mirror above the fireplace that is displayed at Hetton Lawn in Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire (a house that was owned by Alice Liddell's grandparents, and was often visited by Alice and Lewis Carroll) resembles the one drawn by John Tenniel, and is cited as a possible inspiration for Carroll. The novel prompted a new-found appreciation for its predecessor when it was published'. Shipping terms
For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging materials; any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only; for the UK, our standard rate is for first class, and the priority rate includes tracked (signed for) delivery; for International sales, our standard rate is for Airmail delivery, and the priority rate is for tracked (International signed for) delivery. We would prefer that you choose the priority rate (tracked option) for higher value books of say £50 or more. Please note that we will always reduce shipping fees where appropriate e.g. for smaller (lighter) books when we accept your order. For heavier books and sets etc. we will often 'soak up' the extra cost, but on occasion, we may need to charge more than the quoted shipping fee. However, customers will always have the option to either accept or decline the revised order amount. We will also reduce the overall shipping fee for multiple orders. We will endeavour to ship all books within two business days of receiving your order.
