Oliver made the required promise, and Bret handed him the book.
"Go ahead; open it."
Oliver took the worn copy of The Fellowship of the Ring and opened it up apprehensively. Immediately he dropped the book onto the floor with a thud. When it hit the hardwood, out bounced an impressive gold ring with strange markings on it. Oliver plopped down onto his bed with his eyes wide and then reached down to pick up the ring. He was in disbelief, and at that moment even more astounded than he ever could have imagined possible.
Bret began to prepare himself as for how to best convey the story about the mysterious ring to his bewildered brother, and the reason it had come to be pressed beneath the cover of his recently coveted book.
