THE LOST SKILLS OF INDEPENDENCE EXPLAINED is a practical guide for anyone who wants to become more capable, resourceful, and confident in everyday life without giving up modern convenience.
Written for complete beginners, homeowners, renters, families, young adults, and anyone interested in self-reliance, this book brings together useful household skills that previous generations often learned as part of daily life. Instead of simply listing forgotten abilities, it explains how they work, why they still matter, what tools are needed, what mistakes to avoid, and when a job should be left to a qualified professional.
Inside, you will learn how to build practical independence step by step.
Discover how to cook satisfying meals from basic ingredients, organize a functional pantry, reduce food waste, use leftovers wisely, and understand the foundations of simple bread, soups, stews, grains, beans, and sauces.
Learn the essential principles behind freezing, dehydration, pickling, fermentation, and safe home-canning concepts, including the important difference between high-acid and low-acid foods and why tested preservation guidance matters.
Explore beginner-friendly ways to grow food in containers, raised beds, patios, balconies, suburban yards, or rural spaces. Understand sunlight, soil, watering, mulch, herbs, easy vegetables, harvesting, succession planting, and basic composting.
Rebuild practical clothing skills by learning how to sew on buttons, repair loose seams, patch small tears, hem garments, understand care labels, and help clothing last longer.
Become more confident with basic household tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, drills, levels, tape measures, clamps, saws, and fasteners. Learn how accurate measuring, marking, and planning can prevent wasted materials and frustrating mistakes.
You will also discover how to handle sensible low-risk household maintenance, including loose hardware, squeaky hinges, minor wall damage, caulking, weather sealing, furniture care, tool maintenance, leak awareness, household inspections, and preventive routines.
The book also explains the systems that keep a home functioning. Learn how to locate water shutoffs, recognize warning signs of plumbing trouble, understand circuit breakers, avoid overloaded outlets, use extension cords more safely, maintain smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, and recognize situations that require professional help.
Beyond physical repairs, you will learn how to make smarter repair-versus-replace decisions, organize household records, maintain offline emergency information, understand basic maps and navigation, prepare for ordinary seasonal disruptions, maintain a first-aid kit, and build a more organized and resilient household.
This is not a survivalist manual. It does not tell you to abandon technology, live off-grid, or attempt dangerous work beyond your abilities.
Instead, it teaches a more useful definition of independence:
Knowing how to maintain what you own.
Understanding how everyday systems work.
Solving simple problems before they become expensive ones.
Wasting less.
Preparing calmly.
And recognizing when professional help is the smartest choice.
The book also includes practical resources such as a 30-Day Practical Independence Challenge, Household Skills Assessment, Basic Household Tool Checklist, Seasonal Maintenance Checklist, Pantry Foundation Checklist, and Skills to Learn Next worksheet.
You do not need a farm, workshop, large garden, or expensive equipment to become more capable.
You simply need to start with one useful skill, practice it, and build from there.
THE LOST SKILLS OF INDEPENDENCE EXPLAINED is for readers who want to rely less on replacement, convenience, and guesswork—and more on knowledge, maintenance, judgment, and practical confidence.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
