Dopo il 1550 Michelangelo non dipinge pi� nulla, si dedica molto all.architettura e scolpisce solo per s�. La sua concezione figurativa � quindi affidata ai disegni, per la prima volta qui raccolti in un.ampia e significativa selezione che illustra l.inesauribile vena inventiva di Michelangelo. Alcuni sono stati eseguiti per suoi collaboratori che li hanno poi tradotti in dipinti, altri vanno considerati come elementi di una sua personalissima meditazione esistenziale. In questo senso � molto suggestivo l.affiancamento alle rime spirituali, in particolare quelle attestate da alcuni fogli provenienti dalla Biblioteca Vaticana, anch.esse scritte negli ultimi anni. Tra i disegni spiccano sei drammatiche e commoventi Crocifissioni considerate le sue ultime opere grafiche, realizzate in una forma quasi trasfigurata, modernissima, molto simile al modo di lavorare il marmo della Rondanini. Il libro affronta anche il tema della fortuna dei modelli michelangioleschi, con particolare riferimento alla Piet� e al Crocifisso per Vittoria Colonna, tradotti in stampe e dipinti che si diffusero in tutta Europa.
