LUTING CEMENTS: A Comprehensive Guide to Dental Luting Agents

Dental luting cements are biomaterials used to retain and seal indirect restorations. They play a critical role in ensuring marginal integrity, preventing microleakage, and enhancing the longevity of endodontic treatments. Over time, luting agents have evolved from conventional materials like zinc phosphate and glass ionomer cements to advanced adhesive resin-based systems. Each cement differs in composition, mechanical strength, adhesion mechanism, solubility, and biocompatibility. Proper selection depends on the type of restoration, esthetic demands, moisture control, and clinical conditions. Modern luting cements also provide fluoride release, improved bond strength, and enhanced durability. Understanding their properties and indications is essential for predictable clinical success. Appropriate manipulation and cementation protocols further influence the long-term performance of indirect restorations.
