Arishima Takeo spent four years in the United States studying and working at the turn of the century. He was one of the first Japanese men to do so. This book is a culmination of his experiences in a totally new, totally strange Western society.

About the Author

Yosano, Akiko 1878-1942, Japanese poet, activist, and critic. Best known for passionately romantic verse, she infused the classic tanka poetic form with new life and a heady sensuality. Yosano and her husband Tekkan Yosano, also a poet, published the literary journal My(j(, which introduced a number of poets of the contemporary Japanese romantic movement to the literary public. A prominent pacifist and feminist, Yosano spoke out against the Sino-Japanese war and the growing nationalistic fervor of the times. She later founded a woman's college, the Bunka Gakuin. Translator: Sanford Goldstein is professor of English at Purdue University, where he teaches creative writing and literature. He has studied and lectured in Japan, and has co-translated several other works of Japanese literature. Seishi Sinoda formerly served as Chairman of the Department of English at Niigata University in Japan, where he specialized in teaching British and American literature. In retirement he continues to teach in Niigata. He has also co-translated with Sanford Goldstein. Tangled Hair is the result of four years of collaboration between the two translators.
