Flawed copy lacking title/copyright leaf. Paged as 3-853, [1], [map stub], [8]. Hardcover: H 22.75cm x L 15.5cm. Modern re-binding in dark brown buckram; bright gilt stamped horizontal bars to spine along with black title block with bright gilt lettering. Toning and fading to original marbled text block edges. New endpapers and flyleaves; original marbled front and rear free endpapers retained as flyleaves; long tear to original front flyleaf with pencil ownership inscription on recto; lacks aforementioned title; first leaf present is unpaged (but presumably 3-4) and features b/w portrait of David Livingstone; pages 5-6 are Preface with pencil inscription at page 5's gutter margin. Recent pencil notation at top of new ffep "Published 1881" but this is probably incorrect per OCLC edition citations. Some foxing and a few creased corners. B/w illustrations throughout many as full page on single-sided paged leaves. Foldout color map is mostly missing with torn title panel being the only remnant. Eight pages of publisher's advertisements at book's rear. Binding is quite firm as the re-binder's stitching is unassailable. Pagination of 853 matches several OCLC citations for a Philadelphia-Hubbard Bros. 1875 imprint although there are numerous more entries for Hubbard 1875 imprint at 805 pages; likely the book dates a year or a few later and Hubbard simply failed to revise the title page date. OCLC indicates that Hubbard imprints are the most prevalent but there was at least one other Philadelphia imprint by publisher Bancroft; OCLC also indicates that there was an 1881 Boston edition issued under the altered titled "The Lives and Travels of Livingstone and Stanley . . ." with a pagination of 761 (thereby countervailing the aforementioned ffep note).
