Issued with full title being A COMPENDIUM OF MEDICAL SCIENCE, OR, FIFTY YEARS' EXPERIENCE IN THE ART OF HEALING: BEING A PLAIN AND PRACTICAL TREATISE ON THE PREVENTION AND CURE OF DISEASE: DESIGNED TO ENLIGHTEN THE POPULAR MIND IN THE TRUE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES OF MEDICINE, AND PROTECT THE READING PUBLIC FROM THE MISCHIEFS OF QUACKERY. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.25cm. Original quarter leather binding; darkened brittle spine leather chipped at ends and center with slender loss to "Jenning's Medical Compendium" title label affecting most of "Medical" and last three letters of "Compendium." Staining and soiling to brown cloth boards which are faintly decorated with floral pattern. Front and rear boards tenuously attached by binding strings. Old newspaper clipping glued to front pastedown. Only a few fractional remnants present of initial leaves inclusive to page 26; large chip at top fore-edge corner of pages 27-28; fore-edge third of pages 29-36 also lacking. First complete leaf present is pages 37-38 with page 37 having the concluding text of the Preface. Part I-Chapter I begins on page 41. Variable foxing to leaves inclusive to last complete text page 526. Only partial fragments to pages 527 onwards to rear free endpaper; the remaining stubs seem to place the book's pagination at 560 or so but the Library of Congress catalog calls for 592 so evidently missing last 33 text leaves plus concluding blanks. The intact text block remains firmly bound. OCLC only cites copies only at thirteen member institutions with only a single edition issued by Tuscaloosa, Alabama printer Marmaduke J. Slade so, despite the lacking leaves including the all important title leaf, it seems safe to attest that this is significantly flawed copy is still a scarce antebellum Southern imprint.…
