A Very Near Fine Matched Set, Clean And Bright, Former Owner's Name On Front Blank. Insured International Shipment At Great Additional Cost. Lady Catherine Hannah Charlotte Elliott Jackson (1824?1891), Was The Second Wife Of Diplomat Sir George Jackson (1785?1861), And A Prolific Author In Her Own Right, Especially In The Area Of European History And Of The Court Of France In The 16Th Century. After The Death Of Her Husband In 1861, She Turned To Literature, Starting By Editing The Diaries And Letters Of Her Husband's Early Life. He Was A Distinguished Diplomat, And Is Best Known For Accompanying Sir Charles Stuart To Germany And Entering Paris With Him In 1815, And For His Efforts In Connection With The Abolition Of The Slave Trade. She Studied A Variety Of French Memoirs, And Compiled From Them These Books On French Society, Which Read Well, And Of Interest For The Light They Shed On The Development Of The Practical Realities Of Modern Government. Their Appeal To 1890'S Audiences Lay In Diverting Attention From The Real And Extremely Complex Problems Of National Governments, And In Their International Relations At The End Of The Nineteenth Century- People Who Could Afford These Books Thought They Had Paid People Enough To Take Care Of The Problems, A Childish Delusion Made Horribly Clear By The Entire Twentieth Century.
