A highly successful 19th-century sentimental novel written by American author Maria Susanna Cummins. The story follows Gertrude "Gerty" Flint, a mistreated eight-year-old orphan rescued from her abusive guardian by a kind old lamplighter named Trueman Flint. As she grows, she overcomes trials through Christian faith, resilience, and the support of a loving community, eventually maturing into a virtuous young woman.
