Synopsis:
Ask folks around Landenberg, Pennsylvania about the railroads, that at one time served the community here, and most of the answers you will receive will be in reference to the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Pomeroy and Newark and the Pommie Doodle. All are names associated with the railroad that ran from Pomeroy, Pennsylvania to Delaware City, Delaware by way of Landenberg. But, there was another railroad that came to town in 1872, a full eight months prior to the arrival of the Pomeroy and Newark. That railroad was the Wilmington & Western. Today the only visible reminder of the Wilmington & Western in Landenberg is the bridge abutment in the Village. However, throughout the hills and valleys that it once traveled are hidden reminders that it too was once an important part of Landenberg life many years ago. Research for this book was done by poring through page after page of maps and inventory records, digging through the archives from New Garden Township Historical Commission, reading various old newspaper articles and other local written documents. But most of the research came from walking the 2.85 miles of the old right-of-way, digging, speculating and uncovering some of the mysteries that lie hidden in Landenberg’s hills and fields. Perhaps Landenberg’s forgotten railroad can once again be remembered.
About the Author: Mary H. Simons lives in Landenberg, PA with her husband and four arrogant cats. She currently serves on the Board of Directors and volunteers with the train and engine crews of the Wilmington & Western Railroad, Delaware's Operating Railroad Museum.
