Gail Tompkins I’m a teacher, first and foremost. I began my career as a first-grade teacher in Virginia in the 1970s. I remember one first grader who cried as the first day of school was ending. When I tried to comfort him, he sobbed accusingly, “I came to first grade to learn to read and write and you forgot to teach me.” The next day, I taught that child and his classmates to read and write! We made a small patterned book about one of the stuffed animals in the classroom. I wrote some of the words and the students supplied the others, and I duplicated copies of the book for each child. We practiced reading it until everyone memorized our little book. The children proudly took their books home to read to their parents. I’ve never forgotten that child’s comment and what it taught me: Teachers must understand their students and meet their expectations.

My first few years of teaching left me with more questions than answers, and I wanted to become a more effective teacher so I started taking graduate courses. In time I earned a master’s degree and then a doctorate in Reading/Language Arts, both from Virginia Tech. Through my graduate studies, I learned a lot of answers, but more importantly, I learned to keep on asking questions.

Then I began teaching at the university level. First I taught at Miami University in Ohio, then at the University of Oklahoma, and finally at California State University, Fresno. I’ve taught preservice teachers and practicing teachers working on master’s degrees, and I’ve directed doctoral dissertations. I’ve received awards for my teaching, including the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at California State University, Fresno, and I was inducted into the California Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame. Throughout the years, my students have taught me as much as I taught them. I’m grateful to all of them for what I’ve learned.

I’ve been writing college textbooks for more than 20 years, and I think of the books I write as teaching, too. I’ll be teaching you as you read this text. As I write a book, I try to anticipate the questions you might ask and provide that information. I also include students’ samples so you can see concepts that I’m explaining, and I include lists of trade books that you can refer to as you work with students.

When I’m not teaching, I like to make quilts, and piecing together a quilt is a lot like planning effective language arts instruction. Instead of using pieces of cloth, teachers use the patterns of practice and other instructional procedures described in this text to design instruction for the diverse students in today’s classrooms. That’s why I like to use quilts on the cover of Language Arts. I want to thank quilter Cher Cartwright and illustrator Linda Bronson for their superb artistic contributions. You’ll see their art on the cover and inside this book.

Without limiting the foregoing, our services are not available to minors. If you do not qualify, please do not use our services. SHOPGOODWILL.COM may refuse our services (such as, but not limited to listings, chat, and bidding) to anyone at any time, at our sole discretion.
Fees. Joining SHOPGOODWILL.COM is free to all Bidders except as indicated in Section 1. You are responsible for paying all applicable taxes and for all hardware, software, service and other costs you incur to bid, buy, procure a listing from us or access our servers. We may in our sole discretion add, delete or change some or all of our services at any time.
SHOPGOODWILL.COM is Only a Venue. Our site acts as the venue for sellers, restricted to registered members of Goodwill Industries International, to conduct auctions and for bidders to bid on sellers’ auctions. We are not involved in the actual transaction between buyers and sellers. As a result, we have no control over the quality, safety or legality of the items advertised, the truth or accuracy of the listings, the ability of sellers to sell items or the ability of buyers to buy items. We cannot and do not control whether or not sellers will complete the sale of items they offer or buyers will complete the purchase of items they have bid on. In addition, note that there are risks of dealing with foreign nationals, underage persons or people acting under false pretense. Because we do not and cannot be involved in user-to-user dealings, in the event that you have a dispute with one or more users, you waive and release Goodwill Industries of Orange County, d.b.a. SHOPGOODWILL.COM, (and our agents and employees) from claims, demands and damages (actual and consequential) of every kind and nature, known and unknown, suspected and unsuspected, disclosed and undisclosed, arising out of or in any way connected with any such disputes which might arise, and you further agreed to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Goodwill Industries of Orange County, d.b.a. SHOPGOODWILL.COM is named in any action arising from any such dispute, or otherwise made a party to any such dispute. For legal reasons, we cannot nor do we try to control the information provided by other users which is made available through our system. By its very nature, other people’s information may be offensive, harmful or inaccurate, and in some cases will be mislabeled or deceptively labeled. We expect that you will use caution -- and common sense -- when using our site.
Bidding and Buying. New bidders (accounts less than 30 days old) will be restricted to participating on no more than 15 active auctions at one time. As a bidder, if you have the highest bid at the end of the auction, at or above the minimum bid price (or in the case of reserve auctions, at or above the reserve price), and your bid is accepted by the seller, you are OBLIGATED to complete the transaction. Please read the shopgoodwill.com non-paying bidder policy. Bids are not retractable except in exceptional circumstances such as the seller materially changing the description of the item after your bid or clear typographical errors, or when you can not authenticate the identity of the seller. You may not bid in a way that pulls other bidders to their maximum bid, retract the high bid, and then rebid at a small increment above the legitimate high bidder (bid manipulation). If you choose to bid on adult items, you are certifying that you have the legal right to purchase items intended for adults only.
