La même année, il est nominé au 81e prix des nouveaux mangaka du Weekly Shônen Magazine avec Orz. Cette histoire courte sera aussi sa première oeuvre publiée, dans le Magazine Special (Kodansha).
Il débute la sérialisation de L’Attaque des Titans en octobre 2009 dans le Bessatsu Shônen Magazine (Kodansha). Cette série remporte en 2011 le 35e prix manga de Kodansha en catégorie shônen.
