About this Item

first edition; no dj as issued; from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert, with Gilbert's inscription on the front free endpaper; bookseller's price notation pencilled on inside front cover; small piece of tape on lower spine, front cover shows some marks from a red pen or pencil, heel & crown of spine, edges, and corners bumped, covers rubbed, spine sunned, top book edge foxed, else clean and tight, overall rating Fair to Good; my Dad, William H. Gilbert, studied with Sapir taking no fewer than twelve anthropology and linguistics courses from him -- I recorded on tape on Jan. 24, 1982 his memories of his teacher from the University of Chicago days in the early 1930s according to a note laid into the book "In Jan. 1982 I asked [him] why he wasn't invited to contribute to this volume. Dad said that if an invitation was extended, it didn't reach him. He was moving around too much in those years"; this edited book is chock full of important papers, evidence of Sapir's seminal influence on anthropology and linguistics during his years at Chicago and Yale, as for example, Whorf ("The Relation of Habitual Thought and Behavior to Language"), Kluckhohn ("Patterning as Exemplified in Navaho Culture"), Dennis ("The Socialization of the Hopi Child"), and Du Bois ("Attitudes Toward Food and Hunger in Alor"); it.would interest readers and collectors of books on the development of anthropology in the U.S. in the 20th century, many of the chapters being as challenging today as when they were first written; cloth covers are light gray with blue lettering on the front and spine; 4to -- 10 inches tall, xii + 298 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
