The Laparoscopic Mind: Understanding — Not Memorising — The Basics of Laparoscopic Surgery

Your hands are not the problem. Your map is.

Every surgeon remembers the first day at the laparoscopic table. The instruments moved backwards. The world went flat. The tissue went silent. And somewhere in that hour, a quiet, career-ending sentence formed: I'm just not a laparoscopy person.

It is the most costly misunderstanding in surgical training, and it is entirely preventable. That clumsiness is not a verdict on your talent. It is physics: a handful of ordinary facts about levers, light and lost feedback that nobody explained. Understood, they stop being the enemy.

The Laparoscopic Mind is not a list of steps to memorise. It is a book of reasons. Why your instruments invert. Why depth vanished, and what to use in its place. Why you must learn to see force instead of feeling it. Why entry is the most dangerous minute of most operations. Why the Critical View of Safety is an argument that may never be concluded on suspicion.

Written by surgeons for every trainee who has stood at the monitor and privately wondered whether they belong there.

You do. Surgery must be understood, not memorised.
