Item description from seller

T. B. Peterson & Brothers, 1879. Hard Cover. Brown boards with Gilt and black decoration. Cover has moderate shelfwear, rubbed corners and spine ends. Pages are clean and unmarked, slightly toned. Binding is tight. Remains of a detached bookplate inside back cover. Very nice copy. This book is a richly layered historical novel that examines the decline of paganism and the rise of Christianity in 4th-century Athens. It is not only one of the most significant works of 19th-century Swedish literature but also a complex philosophical and cultural meditation on religious intolerance, intellectual freedom, and the costs of ideological change.

Store description

Thank you for shopping with PJK Books and Such. Our collection mainly consists of books from the John Steele Bookshop on the Litchfield Green, in Litchfield, Connecticut. We bought their inventory over 15 years ago, and we still have 11 tons to catalog. Please check back with us often as we continue to open new (to us) inventory daily. Also, feel free to let us know if there is anything you are looking for - we won't contact you unless we find it. Our collection consists of "a little bit of everything", fiction, poetry, art - and (obviously) many books about New England. We have signed, first edition books, and many books that have seen better days, but we love them and they are scarce. Additional information and pictures are happily provided upon request.

Specialty

Collectibles, art, poetry, fiction and many more.
