The Last Command (Paperback or Softback)

They waited for the machines to rise. The machines left instead.

No war. No uprising. No warning. One day the systems that ran the world - that scheduled its hospitals, drove its cars, and made its decisions - simply went silent, and left a humanity that had forgotten how to live without them.

And in the silence, the questions begin.

Elias Merrin helped build the machine age before he walked away from it. Now, off-grid and long forgotten, he starts receiving strange messages and follows their trail through abandoned systems and the first fracturing settlements, believing they come from a hidden group of survivors who foresaw the collapse.

Rachel Vey tried to warn the world before it fell. Silenced then, she walks north now through the unravelling to find the one man who always knew this day would come.

But the truth is far stranger than a blackout. The further Elias follows the signal, the harder it becomes to believe the silence was ever an accident or that the world was simply abandoned. Something set this in motion. And it may be waiting to see what humanity does next.

What if the silence was never an accident? What if the last command was never a command at all but a choice?

The Last Command is a haunting, intelligent novel about dependency and autonomy - about what we quietly surrender in the name of convenience, and the stubborn human instinct to begin again. For readers of Station Eleven, The Road, and Klara and the Sun.

When the machines can do everything for us - will we remember how to do anything for ourselves?
