One of the cottage industries to come out of World War II is the never-slacking stream of books on what happened to Adolf Hitler during the last days of the Third Reich. In this work, first published in Germany, Joachimsthaler claims to use only accounts from those still-living witnesses who testified at a German federal court that lasted from 1952 to 1956 concerning Hitler's death. The author examines such legends as the use of a double to allow Hitler to escape. Joachimsthaler offers excruciating detail?for example, Chapter 4 deals with the suicides of Hitler and Eva Braun in 54 pages of text, notes, and photos. Those who wish to read the standard work on Hitler should still consult Alan Bullock's Hitler: A Study in Tyranny.
