The brutal (and largely unknown) Albigensian Crusade took place from 1209 to 1229 in Languedoc, France, and was perpetrated by the Catholic Church. The victims were thousands of Cathars - the members of the region's popular religion. In this extraordinary work, author Don Durrett follows six women of the time to capture the Cathar's final years in rich and historic detail. Although scrutinized for their beliefs, disciples Sarah, Miriam and Mary Magdalene, and later Margaret, Blanche and Joanne, offer Jesus' true teachings of love and oneness and a Gnostic philosophy that transcendence comes from within. "Last of the Gnostics" weaves actual battles and historic figures in a fictional fabric, and uses this backdrop to explore a version of deeply feminine Gnostic spirituality that is quite similar to modern, new age philosophy. Its inspiring, loving message blankets the pages - maybe most notably through the Cathar's subsequent persecution as heretics and extinction.

From the Inside Flap
Last of the Gnostics offers this deep, meaningful truth while giving us an exciting and noble adventure as the last of the Cathars struggle to keep the enlightened spirituality of Jesus and Mary Magdalene alive against the vicious onslaught of the Roman Catholic Church. How many of us realize that the infamous Inquisition against "heretics" was a violent, prolonged effort to eliminate those who followed Jesus' actual teachings?
Within these pages, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene is revealed in all of its simple and gentle glory; we might wonder why The Church felt (and still feels today), so threatened by it.
Author Don Durrett offers us the answer: The beliefs of the Gnostics give divinity and spiritual power to all of us, because God is within each of us. As we read Last of the Gnostics, we perceive that in Gnostic belief, there is no need for the Vatican or any "middle man" with ultimate spiritual authority over us. Gnostics therefore threaten the very foundation of the religious hierarchy with their great amounts of money and power. The Gnostics would set the people free!
Last of the Gnostics is an inspiring blend of Gnostic spiritual truth woven within the story of Jesus' true believers as they face virtual extinction at the hands of The Church. It is a fight for survival and a glimpse of the love and devotion these brave Gnostics felt for each other and for humankind.
This book is a thrilling and enlightening experience not to be missed.
