From an Amazon reader review: "Although this was first published in 1958 it remains one of the best one volume books about the battle of atlanta. Many excellent books have been written about the military campaign but this book is more about the people of Atlanta & how they lived on a daily basis. Men, women, & children had to dodge Gen. Sherman's cannon shells while they walked through the city. Thousands of wounded Confederate soldiers filled Atlanta's buildings, & the stench of death was everywhere. Yet the people of Atlanta kept hoping for a Confederate victory. In their eyes Gen. Sherman was the devil himself. This book tells the story of the battle for Atlanta through the words of those who lived it. It's packed with eyewitness accounts from both soldiers & civilians as well as newspaper accounts (although these are not very reliable). For Civil War buffs or for someone who just watched 'Gone With the Wind' & wants to learn more this book is a must have!".
