Add to basketSmallish (6 1/4 inches high by 4 1/4 inches wide, approx.) hardcover, sewn-bound in red cloth, with blind-stamped title, author, and decoration on front cover, and gilt title and author on spine, is in FAIR condition, having what look like two flecks of black paint on front cover; corners bumped and slightly worn; stain on front cover, bottom half of right side, and some similar stains on back (looks like water); some slanting to spine; some rubbing/scuffing to covers; some foxing to both endpaper sections; faint ghost of old erased penciled price at top right of first free endpaper; tear at inside edge (almost not noticeable) of title-page that goes about half-way down; pages have some darkening from age, but type is clear and well-printed. Only one illustration in book, a black and white frontispiece painting with the title: "In a tone of mingled pleasure and contempt she said, 'Why, it is Gwynplaine!'". No date on volume, but looks to be perhaps from around 1915. Text is in English, with no translator credited. Classic Hugo novel was basis for one of the best silent films, "The Man Who Laughs," produced and released by Universal in 1928, directed by Paul Leni, and starring Conrad Veidt in the title role, and Mary Philbin. Fiction. Novel. French. Classics. DB [2].
