The character was created to attack Whig war policy.Written by John Arbuthnot, a physician and satirist, who is known for the contributions to mathematics, and for being a member of the Scriblerus Club. He is also best known for his creation of this John Bull figure. Arbuthnot was also the court physician to Queen Anne.Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Barbara Hylton Madge'. Barbara Hylton Madge was the mother of Charles Madge, an English poet, sociologist, and journalist. Charles Madge was also a founder of Mass-Observation.
