"Law and Freedom in the School" is a foundational exploration of the dynamic relationship between institutional discipline and individual autonomy in the educational environment. Written by the influential educator George A. Coe, this work delves into the pedagogical challenges of fostering genuine freedom within the framework of social and legal order. Coe argues that the purpose of education is not merely the transmission of facts, but the development of moral and civic character through active participation in a self-governing community.

The text examines how the school environment can serve as a laboratory for democracy, where students learn to navigate the complexities of "law" as a cooperative necessity rather than a restrictive force. By addressing themes of project-based learning and the psychological development of the child, Coe provides a compelling vision for a school system that respects the agency of the student while preparing them for the responsibilities of adult citizenship. This work remains a significant contribution to the philosophy of progressive education, offering timeless insights into the balance of authority and liberty in the pursuit of social progress and ethical growth.
