About the Author
In 1969, another move brought her and her husband to Northern California. Returning to her academic interests, she took courses in the fields of biology and law and received an advanced degree (J.S.M.) from Stanford University Law School. She taught at Stanford and Heidelberg Universities and lectured at several German and Swiss universities. Her books and articles have been published in German as well as in English.
In the early 1980s, she founded the Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research, which examines relationships between law and biology, with an emphasis on how recent findings in biology and anthropology inform the history, practice, understanding, and utility of law. She continues her research on the interaction between law and biologically based human behavior, together with Research Fellows of the Institute. The Gruter Institute is the only one of its type in the world, and it continues to remain at the intellectual forefront of biology-law explorations.
