“O you who have faith! Prescribed for you is fasting as it was prescribed for those who were before you, so that you may be Godwary.” (1:183) Ramadan is one of the most important months of the Islamic calendar. It is when the faithful mark the revelation of the Quran, the martyrdom of Imam Ali, the death anniversary Lady Khadija, the wife of the prophet, the birth anniversary of the grandson Imam Hassan. According to the Quran, the main purpose of fasting is so that one may attain taqwa or God-consciousness as said in the above verse. Ramadan is more than just fasting, however. In the spirit of Ramadan, this journal invites you to reflect on the holy month of Ramadan and guides you through four sections: Quran, Self-Struggle, Religious Figures, and Al-Quds. The culture of creating Islamic art and literature has been long established in other languages, and the LAYLA JOURNAL VOL 2 continues to nurture this tradition in English.
