Lays of Ancient Rome with Ivry and The Armada, Macaulay, Thomas Babington. Published by Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig, 1851. 12mo up to 8�" tall. with engraved plate, frontispiece and 32 tipped in sepia photographs of scenery, figures, sculptures etc. Bound in vellum with gilt borders, marbled endpapers, red edges. Light toning and otherwise contents are in fine condition; marks to boards; binding is tight. From an 1842 collection of narrative poems, or lays, by Thomas Babington Macaulay. Four of these recount heroic episodes from early Roman history with strong dramatic and tragic themes, giving the collection its name. Macaulay also included two poems inspired by recent history: Ivry and The Armada.
