"Leached Outcrops as Guides to Copper Ore" is a seminal contribution to the field of economic geology and mineral exploration. Written by Augustus Locke, this technical study addresses one of the most challenging problems in mining: the interpretation of surface features to predict the presence of valuable copper deposits deep underground. The work focuses on the physical and chemical changes that occur in mineralized rocks when exposed to weathering and leaching at the surface.

Locke provides a systematic approach to identifying the residual minerals and textures-often referred to as gossans-that serve as reliable indicators of primary copper sulfide bodies. By analyzing the "iron capping" and the specific characteristics of leached minerals, the author offers practical methodologies for prospectors and engineers to evaluate the economic potential of a site without immediate subsurface excavation. This book remains a foundational text for understanding the relationship between oxidation processes and ore deposition. It is an essential resource for those interested in the history of mining technology, mineralogy, and the scientific evolution of geological prospecting during the early 20th century.
