How to Lead When No One Follows

After electing the first African-American President of the United States, and after significant progress in the election of African-American leaders as mayors and state governors, why haven't our communities felt the benefits? Instead, the African-American community endures the highest prison incarceration, high school drop-out rates, unemployment, and healthcare disparities since the 1970's. Jerry L. Maynard, II issues a call to action to reverse the crises facing the African-American community and to issue a declaration that getting reelected is not a measurable outcome of political success, rather improving the lives of our citizens. How to Lead When No One Follows is a rebuke of a failed system of political leadership and an admonishment to the Black community to demand more of its leaders, and more importantly, itself. Jerry Maynard has fought for the Black community as a lawyer, politician, and pastor, and has seen the good and bad of it all. This book is a manifesto invoked by his passion for equality and empowerment.

Jerry L. Maynard, II is an elected official in Tennessee and a leader in the National Democratic Party. In 2005, Maynard was selected to serve as the Deputy Chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party. He was elected to the Tennessee Democratic Executive Committee for Senate District 19 and in 2008, Maynard was elected to serve on the Democratic National Committee's Standing Committee on Credentials representing President-elect Barack Obama. Maynard went on to serve as a delegate for President Obama in 2012. Maynard currently serves as Chairman of the Finance Committee for the Tennessee Democratic Party and is the Senior Pastor of two Tennessee churches located in Nashville and Clarksville.
