Leadership Without a Safety Net: Seeing Reality, Questioning Assumptions, and Acting Before Choice Disappears

Leadership is easiest to describe when the path is clear. Its real test comes when the facts are incomplete, the stakes are high, and no decision is risk-free.

In Leadership Without a Safety Net, David Bearden draws on more than four decades of leadership experience—from Schwinn, Quasar, Panasonic, and REX Stores to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. Through candid stories of corporate turnarounds, retail disruption, cultural differences, financial crises, and organizational survival, he examines what leadership looks like when familiar answers no longer work.

This is not a book about leadership from a distance. It is about standing inside difficult circumstances, accepting responsibility, and deciding before every consequence can be known. Bearden explores the importance of listening, confronting reality, protecting people without avoiding hard choices, and knowing the difference between what is merely nice and what is truly necessary.

He also considers the next great leadership challenge: artificial intelligence and the disruption it will bring to businesses, institutions, and careers.

Practical, reflective, and grounded in lived experience, Leadership Without a Safety Net is for anyone who must lead through uncertainty—and still move forward with courage, judgment, and hope.
