Leading Before the Storm: How to Recognize Risk, Build Readiness, and Act Before Crisis Forces Your Hand (Leading Through the Storm)

Disruption now moves faster than most institutions can adapt. The leaders who make the greatest difference are the ones who recognize what others overlook, prepare while others postpone, and act while there is still time to change the outcome.

Leading Before the Storm is a field guide to that discipline. Across thirty-two chapters built on documented cases - a warehouse roof that failed in a tornado, a pedestrian bridge that fell two days after a crack was reported, a crowd crush in a narrow alley, a jetliner lost after a bird strike - Dr. Karissa Thomas examines the interval between the first signal and the moment of consequence, and what separated the organizations that used that interval from the ones that let it pass.

Every event, figure, and finding is traced to a primary source: investigation reports, inquest findings, regulatory filings, and agency documentation, drawn from 237 verified references. What emerges is not a collection of maxims but a pattern, the recurring structural reasons that warnings arrive and go unheard.

Inside this book:

Thirty-two chapters, each closing on the mechanism that produced the outcome rather than on the headline

Reality Snapshots opening every chapter with current data on the risks leaders carry now

A working vocabulary for naming risk early enough to act on it

Guidance on building readiness into daily operations rather than bolting it on after loss

Written for executives and organizational leaders; school, district, college, and university leaders; operations and human resources professionals; military, law enforcement, and first responders; nonprofit and community leaders; students and instructors in leadership, emergency management, and public administration; and anyone committed to protecting people and preparing for uncertainty.

This is more than a book about crisis leadership. It is about becoming the kind of leader who sees what others miss, strengthens what others ignore, and changes outcomes before the storm arrives.

The storm is coming. Will you recognize the signal in time?
