This book walks you through the elements of floral
design. It covers all the principles of design and shows twenty-four
various styles. The styles range from Traditional Western and Oriental
to high tech modern and current American. It also covers all the
basics of flower arranging mechanics, such as using foam, wiring
,taping and simple bow making. Learn about the types of flowers by
shape such as line, focal and filler and how to combine them in the
eight basic shapes of arrangements. You will have plenty to study
between the many pages of information and the twenty-two different
floral projects.
Most of us are so happy with the beauty of flowers and leaves that we plunk them in a vase, move them around a little, and enjoy. It took me a long time to understand the difference between a vase full of flowers and a floral composition. The difference lies in the way the flowers are placed in relationship to each other. In a floral design, the size, shape and color of the container, as well as the flowers and leaves, are purposefully selected to be component parts of a whole. They don't "just happen" to come together in a casual way.
Precisely chosen components and carefully combined relationships are called the basic elements and principles of design. Light, space, form, texture, scale and accent are the elements of a design. Unity, balance, harmony and rhythm are principles of a design. The elements are the ingredients of a floral arrangement, and the principles are how you put them together.
For the student of floral art, knowledge of the elements and principles of design is the first goal. Technique and skill begin with the study of the art form. Through knowledge and experience, the concepts become second nature. We no longer have to think about them. The assimilated information becomes transformed and reflected through the imagination. Through awareness of some basic ideas, we move from the rudimentary habit of sticking flowers in a vase into the creative mode of original design.
