Learning Leadership: Building Your Professional Career

As a professional you will go through different stages in your professional development. Learning Leadership provides a roadmap outlining the important points in your career progress, and identifies the behaviors and strategies which will allow you to be successful as you grow. It will finally present a snapshot of the successful organizational leader--how they scan the environment for opportunities, manage organizational change and motivate their employees. Learning leadership provides a detailed examination of the stages that an emerging professional experiences--technical, professional, managerial and leadership. At each of these stages there are knowledge sets, perspectives and behaviors that will allow the candidate to be successful at these levels while looking forward and identifying skills that will be useful at future stages.

Charles L. "Chip" Pickering graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a BS in Engineering Physics and Minor in Mathematics. He obtained an MS in Engineering Management from Marshall University's College of Graduate Studies and a Ph D in Strategic Leadership from Ohio University. Chip has been involved in the construction industry since 1980 and established an engineering company, Pickering Associates, in 1988. Since then Pickering Associates has developed into a regional Architectural-Engineering-Surveying company. Chip recently founded a renewable energy company, Pickering Energy Solutions. Chip is a Professional Engineer and Fellow with the National Society of Professional Engineers, is an Advanced Practitioner with the US Green Building Council (LEED) for Building Design and Construction, is a NABCEP Certified Photovoltaic Installation Professional and has a Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute. Chip has taught business, management and leadership classes at the university level as well as LEED, PMP and other certification and training courses. Chip frequently lectures on leadership, green energy and sustainable construction. Chip has always been interested in Leadership training, and has mentored and coached many young professions on career development.
