Provides a much-needed foundation for training beginning psychotherapists in the crucial elements of psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is a key element in the nation's healthcare system. This book, along with the companion videotape and trainer's manual, uses homework exercises to introduce trainees to tasks common to all psychotherapies, such as developing a working alliance, detecting maladaptive patterns of behavior, handling resistance, and encouraging change. It has been piloted at Stanford University and at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where Dr. Beitman is chairman of psychiatry and neurology.
