Learning the vi Editor (Nutshell Handbooks)

For many users, working in the UNIX environment means using vi, a full-screen text editor available on most UNIX systems. Even those who know vi often make use of only a small number of its features. This is the complete guide to text editing with vi. Early chapters cover the basics; later chapters explain more advanced editing tools, such as ex commands and global search and replacement. Also includes a pull-out quick-reference card. "It is hard to believe that anyone can work on a UNIX system for more than a few moments without invoking vi. Whether your site runs System V.x or 4.nBSD, your system has vi. For those who are looking for an introductory book to give to new staff members who have no acquaintance with either screen editing or with UNIX screen editing, this is it: a book on vi that is neither designed for the UNIX in-crowd, nor so imbecilic that one is ashamed to use it." ---;login, May/June 1989
