The Pitchfork Ranch is a big cattle spread in West Texas, a fourteen-by-twenty mile block in Dickens and King counties. Burns lived on the ranch from 1942 until 1965, while her husband, known as D, served as ranch manager. This book is the result of her observations, notes, and journals, which she kept as a tribute to D and a legacy for her grandchildren. It is filled with salty stories and ranch incidents. The descriptions of cowhands and other colorful characters who worked on the ranch as cooks and helpers spring from Mamie's close association with them.
