About this Item
Set of two leaves from a ledger book that document Native American wares purchased or sold likely from the late 19th or early 20th century. Leaves measure 7 ½" x 12 1 ½" and are lined. Paginated 35-38. Content is on both sides and is somewhat difficult to read. Leaves have moderate toning, heavy soiling and minor chipping to edges; one leaf is torn in half horizontally. Overall fair. These documents contain a catalog of western Native American wares purchased or sold by an unknown collector or trading post. Items catalogued range from "Eskimo Cape Nome" baskets to Pima bowls and ollas. The method used to document the items changes often but all have the name of the tribe the item was acquired from, the item (usually with size and other details), price, and two columns of letters, possibly used as a cataloguing system. There are many places where the items have been crossed out and labeled "closed". Examples of entries include: "Pomo, Mortar basket 18 ½" diameter…6.00, L, HK", "Calpella Valley Tribe, Calif., red bowl, 7…1.00, B, EE", "7553-15, Navajo Marriage Basket Ceremonial Bowl, 13.50, L, KE.".
