Uncommon. The American Colonization Society was founded in 1817, with the goal of returning freed slaves to Africa. In 1822, the Society established the colony of Liberia and by 1867 more than 13,000 of the formerly enslaved had emigrated to Liberia. The topics discussed in this lecture include: Social and Moral Condition of Africa (including Slavery within Africa), Modifications of the Slave Trade (including the Origin of the Slave Trade), Relations of American Slavery to African Civilization, etc.
