Lectures On The Comparative Anatomy And Physiology Of The Invertebrate Animals: Delivered At The Royal College Of Surgeons, In 843 — Richard Owen. This volume presents a pair of culminating Hunterian lectures that survey Cephalopoda and other invertebrates to synthesize anatomy, paleontology, and evolutionary ideas for a scientific audience, with emphasis on physiology and comparative anatomy. Anchored by Nautilus and Belemnites, the work traces shell architecture, locomotion, respiration, and nervous coordination across major cephalopod groups, from primitive Nautilus Pompilius to Belemnites and to decapod and octopod forms, while situating these findings within broader fossil lineages (Ammonites, Orthoceratites, Baculites, Baculiites, Turrilites). It advances a view of evolutionary progress toward true internal skeletons, centralized nervous systems, enlarged eyes, and complex prehensile organs, integrating feeding, digestion, circulation, respiration, and excretion. Ink defense and the evolution of propulsion are discussed, as are sensory and reproductive systems and embryonic development. Throughout, Owen argues for unity of organization across invertebrates and the value of morphology for physiology, using fossil evidence to illuminate living life and foreshadow modern comparative biology.
