"These Lectures, twenty-two in number, were delived to a popular audience, and hence are somewhat discursive in style. They are, as the above title indicates, historical, expository, and practical. But there is one feature strongly impressed upon them throughout. It is the reality of the believer's union with Christ; not as a figure of speech, any more than the Resurrection is a figure of speech; and it is also the reality of the Grace of this Sacrament of which the worthy communicant therein partakes. It this respect, the work is timely in these days, when Zwinglianism, which dispenses with the intervention of the Church, Priest, and Sacraments, so largely prevails, even in our own Communion. And yet, while the work is in earnest, the author carefully guards against Romish errors on this most profound subject.
