Ernst Renan (1823-1892) was a French philosopher, historian, and linguist. He is perhaps most famous for 'The Life of Jesus' (French ed. 1870). He is the author of numerous other works, including 'The Apostles, ' 'Studies of Religious History and Criticism, ' 'The History of the Origins of Christianity' (7 vols.), and 'The History of the People of Israel' (5 vols.).
