Lectures on the Logic of Arithmetic (Classic Reprint)

Make arithmetic a living skill, not just a set of rules.

This edition presents Boole’s view of arithmetic as the Art of Thinking, grounded in the laws of thought. It aims to help teachers and students move beyond rote practice toward clear, practical understanding.

In these lectures, mathematical ideas are connected to real learning habits—attention, relevance, and the emergence of notation. The book explains how to build habits that help pupils think for themselves and apply math to real forces and situations. It also shows a patient, step-by-step way to introduce concepts like varied quantities, symbols, and the meaning behind operations, without overwhelming beginners.

• How arithmetic can become an instrument for clear thinking and problem solving.
• Ways to link numbers to real actions, such as measuring, counting, and weighing.
• Strategies for teaching relevance, anticipation, and the formation of mathematical intuition.
• Examples and exercises designed to unfold concepts gradually and concretely.

Ideal for readers seeking a thoughtful, historical approach to math education that emphasizes understanding over memorization, especially teachers and students exploring the foundations of arithmetic as a learning of thinking.
